Standard Media Group Reports Attempted Abduction of Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich in Nakuru

Standard Media Group has reported an attempted abduction of its Associate Editor, Alex Kiprotich, in Nakuru County.

According to reports, the incident happened on Saturday morning, June 27, 2026, along the Mercy Njeri-Mastoo Road in Rongai.

Witnesses said a Toyota Probox followed Kiprotich’s vehicle before overtaking and blocking him at an isolated section of the road at around 7.30 am.

Three men who were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles then stepped out of the vehicle. One of them opened the rear door of Kiprotich’s car, but the journalist managed to escape safely before the situation became worse.

After the incident, Kiprotich, accompanied by his lawyer Gordon Ogola, reported the matter at Menengai Police Station.

The incident has attracted public attention because it happened just days after a public disagreement between Standard Media Group and President William Ruto’s administration.

President Ruto recently criticised The Standard, accusing the media house of publishing unfair and selective reports against his government.

In response, Standard Group Chief Executive Officer Chaacha Mwita defended the company’s journalism and said the government owes the media house about KSh1.2 billion in unpaid advertising bills. He also warned that the government would be held responsible if any harm came to the company’s staff.

The attempted abduction has been condemned by human rights groups and media observers, who say the incident raises fresh concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists in Kenya.

Investigations into the incident are expected to continue as police work to establish the identity and motive of the armed men.
