US Ebola Patient Taken to Germany as Kenya Court Halts Laikipia Treatment Centre

A United States aid worker infected with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has been flown to Germany for specialised treatment after a Kenyan court stopped the planned Ebola treatment facility at Laikipia Air Base from operating.

The patient was evacuated from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Frankfurt University Hospital in Germany, which has a specialised isolation unit for treating highly infectious diseases.

According to U.S. officials, Kenya was not considered for the medical evacuation because the proposed Ebola treatment centre at Laikipia Air Base is not yet operational.

The facility remains closed after the High Court extended orders suspending its establishment while a case challenging the project is being heard.

The court’s decision means the planned U.S.-supported treatment centre cannot receive Ebola patients until the legal dispute is resolved.

Health officials continue to monitor the Ebola situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where efforts to contain the disease are ongoing.
