Fred Matiang’i Admitted Into Azimio La Umoja Coalition as a National Council Member

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has officially been admitted into the Azimio La Umoja Coalition after being appointed as a member of the coalition’s National Council.

The announcement was made on Monday, August 3, after a meeting of the Azimio National Council, where coalition leaders also announced several changes aimed at strengthening the coalition ahead of future political activities.

Matiang’i Among Three New National Council Members

Azimio Secretary General Caroli Omondi said the coalition had approved three new members to join its top decision-making body.

The new National Council members are:

• Fred Matiang’i
• Former Meru Governor Peter Munya
• Former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti

Their appointment expands the coalition’s leadership as it prepares for the next political phase.

Azimio Announces Rebranding Plan

The coalition also revealed plans to rebrand Azimio La Umoja with a new identity.

According to Caroli Omondi, the changes are part of efforts to reorganise and strengthen the coalition as it seeks to attract more political parties.

DAP-Kenya Expected to Rejoin

Azimio also invited the Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-Kenya) to rejoin the coalition.

DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, who attended the meeting, confirmed that the party is ready to return once it completes its internal approval process.

More Political Parties Invited

The coalition also extended invitations to several other political parties to join Azimio.

They include:

• Democratic Party (DP), led by former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.
• Umoja Na Maendeleo Party.
• People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Kalonzo Confirms Talks With More Parties

Azimio leader Kalonzo Musyoka said discussions are ongoing with other political groups that may join the coalition.

He said he has been tasked with engaging leaders of several parties, including:

• Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), led by Rigathi Gachagua.
• People’s Liberation Party (PLP), led by Martha Karua.
• United Green Movement, associated with former Chief Justice David Maraga.

Kalonzo also confirmed that the coalition is engaging the Linda Mwananchi movement, expressing hope that it will successfully register as a political party before joining the coalition.

The latest changes signal Azimio’s efforts to expand its leadership and bring together more political parties as it prepares for the country’s next political contests.
