South Africa’s Vodacom Adds Two Directors to Safaricom’s Board, Reflecting Its Increased Ownership in the Telco

South Africa’s Vodacom Group has added two of its senior executives to the board of Safaricom PLC as non-executive directors.
The two executives, Mariam Cassim and Matimba Mbungela, were appointed on August 13, 2026, subject to approval by the relevant regulators.
Their appointment comes after the resignation of James Ludlow and Dr. (Eng.) John Kipngetich Mosonik, who also left the Safaricom board on August 13.
Cassim is Vodacom Group’s Chief Executive Officer for Fintech. She has held senior positions at the company since 2017 and has experience in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, deal structuring and commercial management.
Mbungela has been Vodacom Group’s Chief Officer for Human Resources since 2014. He previously held senior human resources positions at Vodacom and Vodafone Group.
He is also a non-executive director at Vodacom’s operations in Tanzania, Mozambique and Lesotho.
The appointments increase the presence of Vodacom Group executives on Safaricom’s board as the South African telecoms company continues to have significant ownership in the Kenyan telco.
Safaricom said the appointments are still subject to regulatory approval.
