A sad mood has covered Kenya’s medical sector following the death of Nairobi Hospital director, Dr Job Obwaka. The well-known gynaecologist died while being rushed to the hospital.
His death comes just a few weeks after he was arrested in a case linked to leadership disputes at Nairobi Hospital.
The news was confirmed by Kenya Medical Association (KMA) chairman, Dr Simon Kigondu. He described Dr Obwaka’s death as a big loss to doctors in Kenya, especially those in the field of gynaecology.
In a message shared on Facebook, Kigondu said it was painful to lose him only 45 days after he had been helped to get out of what he called unfair charges related to the Nairobi Hospital issue.
He said Dr Obwaka will be remembered for standing firm and defending doctors against what he termed as interference by the State in hospital matters.
Dr Obwaka had recently been involved in a public dispute over the management of Nairobi Hospital. The situation led to his arrest together with other officials, causing strong reactions from members of the medical sector.
Some doctors criticised the government, accusing it of interfering with the internal affairs of the hospital.
Apart from his leadership role, Dr Obwaka was widely respected as an experienced gynaecologist. Many knew him as a strong voice in protecting the independence of medical professionals in Kenya.
Leaders have also continued to send their messages of condolence.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale mourned Dr Obwaka, describing him as a respected doctor who made a big impact in Kenya’s healthcare system.
In a message shared online, Duale said Dr Obwaka dedicated his life to improving medical services in the country. He added that the late doctor helped raise standards in maternal and reproductive health.
Duale also said Dr Obwaka mentored many young doctors and played a key role in shaping the medical profession in Kenya.
He sent condolences to the family, friends, and the entire medical community during this difficult time.
