Embakasi North MP James Gakuya Demands Impeachment of Governor Johnson Sakaja

Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya has stepped up his criticism of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, urging leaders to begin impeachment proceedings following the recent transfer of some county functions to the national government.
Speaking during an interview with a local media station on Friday, February 20, 2026, Gakuya revisited earlier efforts by Nairobi Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to remove Sakaja from office.
According to the MP, the push to impeach the governor is overdue, claiming that county leaders had already assessed Sakaja’s performance and found it lacking.

“The impeachment of Governor Johnson Sakaja is long overdue because members of the county government are the ones who have checked the governor and arrived at a conclusion that the governor has stalled and he is not making any strides to thrive,” Gakuya stated.
Gakuya further backed the MCAs’ earlier attempt to oust the governor, arguing that the process was halted after a political understanding involving President William Ruto and the late Raila Odinga.
The renewed calls are likely to reignite political debate within Nairobi County as pressure mounts over the governor’s leadership.
