Guinea Military Leader, Mamady Wins Presidency in Disputed Election

Guinea’s military leader, General Mamady Doumbouya, has been declared the winner of the country’s presidential election, according to early results released by the electoral commission.

The announcement has sparked controversy and criticism, with opposition groups and civil society organisations questioning the credibility of the vote.

Gen Doumbouya, who took power through a military coup in 2021, is seeking to formalise his leadership through the ballot. Provisional results show he won 86.72 per cent of the vote in the December 28 election, giving him a seven-year term without the need for a runoff.

However, several groups opposed to military rule dismissed the election as a sham, saying it was unfair because key opposition leaders were blocked from contesting. Major opposition parties, including RPG Arc en Ciel and UFDG, did not take part in the vote.

Opposition candidates who were allowed to run also complained of irregularities during voting, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the results.

As Guineans waited for the official tally, internet watchdog NetBlocks reported that access to popular social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and TikTok had been restricted. While the government has not explained the move, critics believe it was aimed at silencing public criticism.

Gen Doumbouya had earlier promised that neither he nor members of the military government would run for office, insisting the transition would lead to civilian rule. However, a new constitution approved in September opened the door for him to contest, a move that angered many Guineans.

Despite enjoying support from sections of the youth, the junta leader has faced growing criticism for banning protests, limiting opposition activities and restricting press freedom ahead of the elections.

Guinea is rich in natural resources, including the world’s largest bauxite reserves and large iron ore deposits. The government recently launched the Simandou iron ore project, one of Africa’s biggest mining ventures.

Still, poverty remains widespread, with more than half of the population living below the poverty line, according to the World Bank.
