Kakamega Homeboyz Footballer Abungana Dies of Injury After Night Attack

The Kenyan football community is in mourning following the tragic death of Kakamega Homeboyz defender, Silas Abungana.

Kakamega Homeboyz FC announced that Abungana passed away while undergoing treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, just days after playing in a league match against Mara Sugar.

Reports indicate that the defender suffered severe head injuries after an altercation with his younger brother, stemming from a family dispute. Relatives reportedly pressured him to separate from his wife, whom they deemed unsuitable for the family.

Abungana’s sudden death has deeply affected players, officials, and fans across the Football Kenya Federation, with many expressing grief over losing a talented footballer who was actively competing in the top tier of Kenyan football.

Kakamega Homeboyz Confirms Passing

Kakamega Homeboyz confirmed that Abungana died shortly before midnight on Wednesday, February 4. The club revealed that the injuries were sustained during an attack on Tuesday night, February 3.

“Silas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, 4 February, while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday, 3 February night,” the club stated.

The team described Abungana’s death as a devastating loss and requested privacy and respect for the family during this difficult time.

The club also praised Abungana for his professionalism, dedication, and commitment on the field.

“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss. The club will issue further communication in due course. Rest in Peace, Silas,” the statement read.

Silas Abungana: Career Overview

Silas Shihemi Abungana was a Kenyan professional footballer who played as a defender. He began his top-flight career with Shabana FC, where he was instrumental in strengthening the team’s defense.

Abungana played a key role in Shabana FC’s promotion to the FKF Premier League during the 2022–23 season. The team finished at the top of the National Super League, securing automatic promotion and marking a significant milestone in his career.

Later, he joined Kakamega Homeboyz, where he wore jersey number 31 and continued to contribute as a central part of the club’s defensive lineup.

His untimely death has left a void in both his club and the wider Kenyan football fraternity.
