2 min read
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has shared an update on a major road project that will connect seven counties across the Western, Nyanza, and Rift Valley regions.
According to a notice released on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the project will cover a total of 815 kilometres and is being funded by the World Bank. The roads are part of the Lake Victoria Basin Development Project.
KeNHA said it is now looking for consulting firms to help update important environmental and social studies before construction begins.
Counties to Benefit
The new roads will pass through seven counties, including:
- Siaya
- Kisumu
- Homa Bay
- Migori
- Vihiga
- Nandi
- Uasin Gishu

Key Roads in the Project
The project includes three major highways:
- A 365KM road from Port Victoria through Nyamonye, Asembo Bay, Awasi, to Katito
- A 350KM road connecting Homa Bay, Mbita, Sori, and Muhuru Bay
- A 100KM highway linking Chavakali, Kapsabet, and Eldoret
What Is Happening Now
Before construction starts, experts will update:
- Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA)
- Resettlement Action Plans (RAP)
KeNHA said this process will take about six months and is required before building begins.
The authority also explained that companies can work together to apply for the consultancy jobs, but they must clearly show how they are partnering.
How Companies Will Be Selected
KeNHA said the selection of consultants will follow the World Bank rules, using a method that considers both quality of work and cost.
Expected Benefits
Once completed, the new highways are expected to:
- Improve the movement of goods and people
- Boost trade in the Lake Victoria region
- Connect rural areas with towns and cities
- Reduce travel time and transport costs
Farmers, traders, and business owners are expected to benefit the most from the improved road network.
