Kaluma says ODM will field presidential candidate in all future elections

George Peter Kaluma, the Member of Parliament for Homa Bay Town, has said that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will always present its own presidential candidate in future elections. He explained that this will happen whether the party runs alone or joins a coalition with others.

In a post shared on X on April 6, 2026, Kaluma compared Kenya’s politics to countries like the United States, where different political parties have strong support in specific regions. He also said similar trends are seen in Europe and Africa.

Kaluma pointed out that even in past coalitions such as CORD (2013), NASA (2017), and Azimio (2022), political parties still kept their strongholds in different regions.

He explained that coalitions only work well when partners respect each other’s areas of support and their strength in Parliament and county assemblies. According to him, political parties must fight to have strong numbers in leadership positions.

Kaluma also made it clear that ODM will only join agreements with other parties if they respect its key support regions, mainly in Nyanza and parts of Western Kenya. He stressed that this condition is not open for discussion.

ODM Rejects Outside Pressure on Zoning

Kaluma dismissed advice from outsiders about “zoning,” saying ODM understands what is best for its supporters. He added that the party remains committed to devolution, inclusivity, and human rights.

He warned that any party interested in working with ODM must accept zoning as a condition before coalition talks can begin. Otherwise, they should stay away.

Kaluma also accused some political players of trying to confuse ODM supporters while the party continues to strengthen its position in the current government.

To make his position clear, he said ODM will always have a presidential candidate in future elections, whether it joins other parties or not. He also mentioned that Oburu Oginga is currently the party’s presidential candidate.

Focus on the 2027 General Election

As the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election, ODM is in ongoing talks with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), led by President William Ruto.

ODM leaders, including Junet Mohamed and Gladys Wanga, are pushing for an equal partnership instead of being treated as a smaller partner.

Kaluma insisted that ODM will not give up its strongholds, which include counties like Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya, and Migori.
