Kenyan Auditor Faces US Jail After Admitting to $400,000(Ksh 52M) Fraud in New York

A Kenyan national is staring at a possible prison sentence in the United States after confessing to stealing more than $400,000 (about Ksh52 million) in public funds while serving as a state auditor in New York.

Tobias Otieno, 41, who previously worked with the New York State Comptroller’s Office, admitted in a New York court to the charge of second-degree grand larceny.

Court documents indicate that between 2022 and 2024, Otieno illegally obtained $405,843 from the Town of Wallkill in Orange County. At the time, he had been deployed as a state auditor responsible for examining the town’s financial records.

Investigators revealed that Otieno allegedly misused his authorized access to Wallkill’s banking systems and financial data to divert money from municipal accounts into business accounts under his control.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office described the fraud as a highly sophisticated and complex operation. Authorities claim the suspect attempted to hide the stolen funds by channeling the money through several shell companies and layered transactions.

Otieno, who was earning an estimated $75,000 (about Ksh9.6 million) annually in the role, has since been fired. He is now facing a possible prison term of between four and 12 years, with sentencing scheduled for June.
