The Netherlands Embassy in Nairobi has announced a funding opportunity for Kenyan organisations, with successful applicants set to receive up to KSh150 million to support projects that improve the country’s business environment.
The funding is aimed at helping businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), grow and create more opportunities in Kenya.
According to the embassy, organisations can apply either individually or as a group. Eligible applicants include civil society organisations, private companies, international organisations, and research institutions.
Areas That Will Receive Funding
The Netherlands wants to support projects that address challenges facing businesses in Kenya. The main focus areas include:
- Reducing unnecessary regulations and government delays affecting businesses.
- Improving licensing and registration processes through digital solutions.
- Making it easier for SMEs to access local and international markets.
- Strengthening links between small businesses and larger buyers.
- Creating systems that help businesses find new customers and expand.
Projects aimed at reducing regulatory challenges must be implemented together with a government institution.
Why the Netherlands Is Supporting Kenya
The Netherlands remains one of Kenya’s biggest export markets, especially for horticultural products such as flowers and vegetables.
Trade between the two countries generates billions of shillings and supports thousands of jobs in Kenya’s agricultural sector.
However, the Dutch government noted that several challenges, including changing regulations, delays in government services, and market access barriers, continue to affect businesses operating in Kenya.
