Matatu Strike Suspended for One Week After Talks With Government

The nationwide strike by matatu operators, digital cab drivers and other transport stakeholders has been suspended for one week after discussions with the government.

Following the agreement, public transport services are expected to return to normal in different parts of the country.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 19, by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen during a press briefing held at Harambee House after meetings between government officials and transport sector leaders.

According to Murkomen, both the government and transport stakeholders will continue with talks over the next one week until May 26 to find a lasting solution to the issues raised by operators.

At the same time, the Matatu Owners Association asked all its members to resume work immediately to allow room for negotiations.

MOA President Albert Karakacha said operators should go back to work as discussions continue with the government.

However, he warned that if the talks fail to produce an agreement within the one-week period, transport operators may return to the streets and continue with the strike.
