The Ministry of Health has announced the deployment of 6,360 medical interns for the 2026/2027 internship programme.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the interns will begin their mandatory 12-month internship on July 1, 2026, after the ministry completes all preparations for their placement.
The internship programme is meant to give newly graduated healthcare workers practical experience before they are fully licensed to work independently.
According to the ministry, the group includes 875 Medical Officer interns, 69 Dental Officer interns, 615 Pharmacy Officer interns, and 2,000 Bachelor of Science Nursing Officer interns.
The programme will also have 705 Bachelor of Science Clinical Officer interns and 2,096 Diploma Clinical Officer interns, bringing the total number to 6,360.
The Ministry of Health has directed all eligible pre-interns to collect their internship offer letters in person on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Afya House in Nairobi from 9am.
The latest deployment comes after previous disputes over the salaries of intern doctors, which had caused uncertainty and threatened to disrupt healthcare services in the country.
In 2024, the government and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) reached an agreement that ended plans for a nationwide doctors’ strike.
The posting of the new interns is expected to help improve staffing levels in public hospitals and increase access to healthcare services across the country.
