Oburu Odinga Backs Nicholas Gumbo for Siaya Governor 2027 After Orengo Snubs Broad-Based Government

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has publicly welcomed former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo back to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), in a move that strongly hints at his possible bid for the Siaya governorship in 2027.

The announcement was made during a lively political rally held at Linda Grounds in Siaya on Saturday, February 21. Speaking before a large crowd at Ahindi Grounds in Siaya Town, Oburu formally reintroduced Gumbo to party supporters, symbolically handing him an ODM cap to mark his return to the Orange party.

Oburu Signals Support for Gumbo

While addressing the gathering, Oburu noted that Gumbo, one of ODM’s founding members, had been away from the party for some time but was now officially back.

“There is one person from Siaya who has been out of the party for a while, though he is a founder member of the party, called Nicholas Gumbo. I want to welcome him to the party,” Oburu told the crowd.

Political observers interpreted the gesture as an early endorsement of Gumbo to challenge incumbent Siaya Governor James Orengo in the 2027 general election.

Gumbo Pledges Fresh Leadership

Gumbo welcomed the reception, saying he was proud to return “home” to ODM. He described his comeback as both personal and strategic as he charts his next political move.

According to the former MP, ODM’s core values of equity and people-focused leadership still resonate strongly with Siaya residents.

“Today, I return not to reopen old chapters, but to build new ones. I come back with humility, renewed strength, and a clear vision for a united, progressive, and empowered Siaya,” Gumbo said.

He used the platform to revive his long-standing ambition for the Siaya governorship, promising inclusive leadership and accelerated development if elected.

Political Tensions Within ODM

Gumbo’s warm reception comes at a time when Governor Orengo has appeared politically distant from the Oburu-aligned faction of ODM. Orengo has maintained loyalty to the wing associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and has openly opposed the broad-based government arrangement.

The governor has also ruled out supporting President William Ruto’s re-election bid, further deepening internal political dynamics within the party.

What Lies Ahead

With ODM figures now openly embracing Gumbo, attention is shifting to how the party will manage the looming political contest in Siaya. Analysts say the early signals could set the stage for a high-stakes gubernatorial battle in 2027.

For now, Gumbo says his focus is on unity and service:

“Let this moment mark not just a return, but a renewed commitment to serve, to listen, and to lead inclusively.”
