Orengo Claims Raila Odinga Was Forced to Travel Before Death

Siaya Governor James Orengo has raised questions about the events leading to the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying he does not believe the veteran politician willingly traveled to India before he died.
Speaking during a radio interview on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Orengo suggested that Raila may have been pressured to travel abroad for treatment. The governor hinted that the circumstances surrounding the trip raise serious concerns that should eventually be addressed.
Orengo said he was speaking cautiously out of respect for Raila’s family but maintained that the situation surrounding the journey to India deserves closer attention.
“I speak with a heavy heart and I must be sensitive to the feelings of the family,” Orengo said during the interview. “However, if you look at the circumstances under which Raila was taken out of Kenya, I don’t believe he went to India willingly.”

According to the governor, the former opposition leader was taken to a specific medical institution while accompanied by individuals whose actions he believes should be questioned.
He added that based on his experience handling major legal and political cases, official explanations should always be verified.
Orengo referred to past controversial investigations in Kenya to explain why he believes more scrutiny may be necessary.
He mentioned the death of former Foreign Affairs Minister Robert Ouko, whose case sparked debate after early reports suggested he had taken his own life.
The governor also recalled the widely discussed murder case of Julie Ward, saying such incidents showed the importance of thoroughly examining facts rather than quickly accepting initial explanations.
Because of Raila’s long political career and influence in the country, Orengo argued that the public deserves full clarity about the circumstances surrounding his death.
“The country should not simply accept the explanation that Raila’s death was natural without asking questions,” Orengo said. “Given his position and influence, there is clear public interest in understanding what really happened.”
Orengo has also previously claimed that political efforts are underway to weaken the Orange Democratic Movement party following Raila’s passing.
Speaking during a Linda Mwananchi rally in Kakamega on February 21, 2026, the governor alleged that some political forces were now targeting the party founded by Raila.
“Kifo ya Raila Odinga wameua Raila Odinga, sasa wanataka kuua chama cha Raila,” he told supporters.
The remarks have added to ongoing political debate about the circumstances surrounding Raila’s death and the future of his political movement.
