Pastor James Irungu's 80-Hour Tree Challenge Ends After Collapsing, Rushed to Hospital
Pastor James “Jimmy” Irungu’s ambitious 80-hour tree-hugging challenge came to an abrupt end on Thursday morning after he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
The incident occurred on January 8, just a short time before the challenge was scheduled to officially conclude. Witnesses said Irungu collapsed at around 6:29 a.m., after spending close to 79 hours continuously holding onto a tree in Murang’a County.
He was quickly assisted by people at the scene and taken to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital, where doctors placed him under observation. His condition had not been fully disclosed by press time.

Pastor Irungu launched the challenge on Sunday, January 4, to raise awareness about cancer and environmental health. The initiative aimed to highlight the connection between chemical use, environmental degradation, and the increasing number of cancer cases in Kenya.
Irungu had pledged to maintain physical contact with a single tree for 80 straight hours, allowing only brief breaks for essential needs. Medical teams had been on standby throughout the challenge due to the physical strain involved.
Despite the risks, the campaign drew significant attention, with supporters visiting the site and following the event online.
Irungu consistently maintained that the exercise was not intended to draw personal attention, but rather to spark a national conversation on cancer prevention.
He emphasized that harmful chemicals in food production and farming practices pose serious health risks to Kenyans, urging authorities to take stronger action.
“Protecting the environment is part of protecting human life,” he stated during one of his brief addresses earlier in the week.

Mixed Public Reactions
While many praised Irungu for his dedication and courage, others questioned the safety and effectiveness of such extreme awareness methods.
Some health experts expressed concern that prolonged immobility could lead to serious medical complications, while environmental groups encouraged alternative approaches such as policy lobbying and public education campaigns.
Supporters, however, believe the challenge succeeded in drawing attention to issues that rarely receive sustained national focus.
“Pastor Jimmy has always stood for health and the environment. This was his way of making people listen,” said one volunteer at the site.
Focus Shifts to Recovery
As news of his collapse spread, messages of concern and goodwill poured in from supporters across the country. Many expressed hope that Irungu would recover quickly and continue advocating for cancer awareness through safer means.
Authorities and health professionals are expected to release further updates regarding his condition and the broader lessons from the incident.
