Russian Embassy Speaks After Controversial Videos Spark Public Anger

The Russian government has finally responded following widespread public anger over viral videos allegedly showing a Russian man interacting with several women in Kenya and Ghana.
The controversial clips, widely circulated on social media, triggered strong reactions online. Both the Kenyan and Ghanaian authorities have since launched investigations into the matter.
In a statement released on Monday, February 16, the Russian Embassy in Ghana confirmed that it was aware of media reports linking a suspected Russian national to the incident.
According to the embassy, it had taken note of claims published in Ghanaian media concerning the alleged involvement of a person believed to be a Russian citizen in unethical activities that were reportedly recorded without consent.
However, the embassy stopped short of confirming the man’s identity or verifying whether he is indeed a Russian national.
Viral Clips Spark Online Outrage
The videos have caused widespread outrage across social media platforms in both Kenya and Ghana, with many users demanding swift investigations and justice for the affected women.
Reports indicate that the footage may have been secretly recorded before being shared online without the women’s knowledge or permission, further fueling anger across the two countries and beyond.
In the widely shared clips, the man is seen approaching different women in public places and striking up conversations before allegedly arranging private meetings at his short-stay apartment.
Some of the encounters appear to have taken place in busy locations within Nairobi and Mombasa, including shopping malls, streets, and supermarkets.
The footage reportedly shows the man complimenting the women, requesting their phone numbers, and convincing them to accompany him to his residence — in many cases within hours of their first interaction.
Government Orders Urgent Investigations
Meanwhile, the Kenyan government has ordered a coordinated cross-border investigation to trace the suspected Russian national.
Gender Cabinet Secretary Hanna Cheptumo described the incident as a serious violation of constitutional rights and called for immediate action.
While addressing the press, Cheptumo directed security and investigative agencies to fast-track the probe and work closely with international partners due to the cross-border nature of the case.
“This act is not only a violation of personal dignity and privacy as protected under Articles 28 and 31 of the Constitution of Kenya but also an affront to our national values, cultural integrity, and the safety of women and girls,” Cheptumo stated.
Authorities in both countries are expected to continue with investigations as public pressure mounts for accountability.
