Ruto Secures 1,000 Norway Jobs for Kenyan Seafarers

President William Ruto has announced that 1,000 Kenyan seafarers will get employment opportunities in Norway by the year 2030.

The President said the agreement was reached after holding meetings with Norwegian leaders and major shipping companies in Oslo, Norway.

According to Ruto, the deal will see 120 Kenyan seafarers secure jobs before the end of this year, while the remaining opportunities will be created gradually over the next few years.

Ruto welcomed the commitment made by Wilhelmsen Ship Management and other Norwegian shipping firms to hire Kenyan professionals in the maritime sector.

He noted that the agreement will support Kenya’s efforts to create more jobs abroad and strengthen the country’s blue economy.

Apart from employment opportunities, the discussions also focused on cooperation in green shipping, ocean conservation, and the sharing of maritime technology.

The two countries are also looking to establish green trade corridors to improve trade and reduce pollution from sea transport.

Ruto further revealed that Kenya and Norway are exploring new shipping routes that could boost trade and improve connections between the ports of Mombasa and Lamu and Norwegian ports.

The President’s announcement comes a day after he revealed that Kenya had secured investments worth KSh20.9 billion during his visit to Belgium.

Ruto is currently on a week-long tour of Europe. After visiting Belgium and Norway, he is expected to travel to Finland, where he hopes to attract more investment and opportunities for Kenyans.
