Kalonzo Reveals When United Opposition Will Pick 2027 Presidential Flagbearer
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said the United Opposition coalition will agree on its presidential flagbearer by the first quarter of 2026.
Speaking during an interview with Kameme TV on Friday, December 26, 2025, Kalonzo said the opposition plans to settle on one candidate before April 2026 to prepare early for the 2027 General Election.
According to Kalonzo, choosing a flagbearer early will help unite the opposition and give Kenyans confidence about the coalition’s plans.
“I believe by the first quarter of next year, we should have agreed on our flagbearer. Kenyans want clarity so they can plan and ensure the next election is free and fair,” Kalonzo said.
Opposition Leaders to Hold Talks
Kalonzo explained that opposition leaders will hold consultations to agree on one presidential candidate, while other leaders will be given different roles within the coalition.
He said unity is key and that all leaders must be willing to support the final decision made by the coalition.
Kalonzo Cites Coalition Experience
The Wiper leader said he has wide experience in coalition building, pointing to his involvement in peace efforts during past political crises in Africa. He also referenced Kenya’s 2008 Grand Coalition Government, formed after the disputed 2007 elections.
Kalonzo said he will use this experience to help opposition leaders work together and avoid divisions that could weaken their chances in 2027.
Warning Against Going Solo
He warned that leaders who choose to contest alone after coalition talks may suffer politically. Kalonzo cited the 2002 election, where some leaders declined to join a united front and later performed poorly at the polls.
However, he said the coalition will try its best to ensure all leaders feel included and respected.
Kalonzo Ready to Lead If Chosen
Kalonzo stated that he is ready to lead the opposition if selected as the flagbearer. He assured fellow opposition leaders that he would work to keep the coalition united.
“If I am chosen, I will make sure we stay together and achieve our goal,” he said.
Competition for 2027 Ticket
Several opposition leaders are eyeing the presidency, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has already begun consultations in the Mt Kenya region.
Despite this, opposition leaders have publicly said they are willing to support one candidate once a final decision is made.
Kalonzo Rejects Running Mate Role
Kalonzo has previously made it clear that he will not accept a deputy president position in 2027. He said he has served as a running mate in past elections and now wants to contest as a presidential candidate.
Other leaders, including Martha Karua, have also said they are willing to back one candidate but are not interested in deputy positions.
During the interview, Kalonzo hinted that the United Opposition may be rebranded as “Komboa Kenya”, a name he said reflects the coalition’s goal of addressing the challenges facing Kenyans.
