KNEC Announces Free CBC Courses Training for Senior School Teachers in All Countries
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has unveiled a free training program aimed at equipping all senior school teachers with skills in Competency-Based Assessment (CBA).
KNEC CEO Dr. David Njengere announced the initiative during the release of the 2025 KCSE results at Chebisas High School, emphasizing that the program will help teachers adapt to the new CBC-aligned assessment framework.
“All senior school teachers are encouraged to register on the KNEC portal. The training is free and will guide you through implementing the senior school curriculum effectively,” said Dr. Njengere.
Free Online Training Through KNEC Portal
The training is accessible via a dedicated KNEC online portal, open to every teacher handling senior school classes. Teachers can register using their TSC number, verify their contact details, and immediately access modules tailored to their subjects.
The courses are fully online, self-paced, and flexible, allowing teachers to learn without disrupting classroom responsibilities.
To complement online learning, KNEC is establishing Senior School Assessment Hubs in all counties. These hubs will serve as support centers for teachers, providing technical guidance, collaborative spaces, and ICT integration for project-based learning.
This initiative is part of KNEC’s full transition from the traditional KCSE to CBC-aligned assessments, ensuring nationwide standardization and effective rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum.
Course Structure and Modules
The KNEC CBA training is structured to meet the specific needs of senior school teachers. Online modules are self-paced but can be reinforced through county Assessment Hubs or the Education Assessment Resource Centre (EARC) at New Mitihani House, Nairobi.
Key areas covered in the training include:
-
Designing assessments aligned to CBC learning outcomes
-
Item writing and test development, including performance tasks and practicums
-
Constructing and moderating rubrics
-
Managing portfolios for continuous school-based assessment
-
Quality assurance, psychometrics, and standardization of marking
-
Digital assessment tools and learning management systems (LMS)
Upon completion, teachers receive a KNEC CBA micro-credential, confirming mastery of assessment design, item writing, rubric use, portfolio management, and digital assessment workflows.
The credential is designed to standardize teaching practices nationwide and strengthen school-level quality assurance in the senior school CBC rollout.
