Ol Kalou By-Election Sparks Tough UDA and DCP Political Contests
The seat became vacant after the death of area MP David Kiaraho, leading to a race that has attracted many interested candidates from both sides.
So far, 19 aspirants have shown interest in the seat, showing how intense the battle is likely to be. Out of these, at least 10 are seeking the UDA ticket, while nine are linked to DCP.
Because of the almost equal numbers from both parties, the race is no longer being seen as just a local election. Political observers now view it as an important test of power in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
For UDA, the high number of aspirants shows that the party still has a strong political network and support as the ruling party.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki recently hosted UDA aspirants at his Karen residence, where he said the large number of interested candidates shows that the party is open and democratic.
According to Kindiki, UDA remains committed to free, fair, and transparent nominations in the Ol Kalou by-election.
He also encouraged the aspirants to seek consensus where possible to avoid divisions within the party.
On the other hand, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua is using the by-election as a major chance to test his party’s strength in the Mt Kenya region.
This will be the first major direct political contest between DCP and UDA in the area, making it both symbolic and strategic.
Gachagua confirmed that DCP will field a candidate and said the party has already attracted nine aspirants.
He noted that the high number of candidates interested in the DCP ticket shows growing confidence in the party among local leaders and residents.
Political analysts say DCP’s ability to attract strong interest could signal changing political alignments in the region.
Even as both parties show confidence, attention is now shifting to how they will handle their nominations.
With many aspirants on both sides, poorly managed party primaries could lead to defections, independent candidates, and reduced support from voters.
Such outcomes could play a major role in deciding the final result.
The by-election is also expected to attract national attention after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission set the polling date.
Even before voting begins, the Ol Kalou by-election has already become an important political indicator that may reveal the direction of Mt Kenya politics as the country moves closer to 2027.
