Govt Increases School Funding to Ksh2,340 Per Learner

The government of Kenya has announced an increase in public school capitation money, raising it from Ksh1,420 to Ksh2,340 per learner starting July 2026.

This was confirmed by Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok during a press briefing held on May 5, 2026, where he explained the new education funding plan.

The announcement was made during a stakeholder meeting discussing the current state of education in the country.

Why the Capitation Has Been Increased

According to the government, the increase is meant to help public schools deal with rising costs and financial pressure that has affected learning activities.

For a long time, schools and parents have been complaining that the capitation money was too low and often delayed, making it hard for schools to operate smoothly.

The new adjustment is expected to help schools run better and reduce the burden on parents who sometimes have to step in and cover school expenses.

Julius Bitok said the government has already set aside funds for the new capitation amount and will fully implement the president’s directive.

He added that his office is committed to ensuring that the money reaches schools on time.

“We are going to implement this directive fully,” he said, adding that efficiency in disbursement will now be a priority.

In addition to increasing the capitation, the government also plans to change how funds are released to schools.

The Ministry of Education has promised that schools will now receive capitation money before the start of each school term.

In the past, schools often received funds late, sometimes even after learners had already reported, causing financial strain.

The new system will ensure schools receive money at least a few days before opening dates so they can prepare properly.

President Ruto’s Directive on Education Funding

The changes follow a directive from President William Ruto, who recently ordered a review of school funding to improve learning conditions.

Speaking in Murang’a County on May 3, 2026, the President said the government will now ensure funds are released before schools reopen.

He explained that the goal is to avoid delays that have been affecting school operations across the country.

According to him, schools should no longer struggle waiting for government funds after learners have already reported.

Impact on Schools and Parents

The increase in capitation is expected to bring relief to many public schools that have been struggling with limited resources.

School administrators are likely to benefit from improved planning since funds will now arrive earlier and in higher amounts.

Parents may also feel some relief, as schools could reduce extra charges that were previously used to cover funding gaps.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the move but are also urging the government to ensure timely and consistent disbursement.
