Where Is Oburu Odinga? ODM Leader Misses Major Party Events

ODM leader Dr Oburu Odinga has missed several important political meetings in recent weeks, raising questions among supporters about his health and future role in the party.

The 82-year-old politician was last seen in public during the ODM Youth League Convention held in Nairobi on April 20. Since then, he has not attended several major ODM events across the country.

Among the meetings he missed are the youth convention in Kilifi, the opening of the Raila Odinga Hospital in Mombasa, and Labour Day celebrations held in Vihiga County.

His absence was also noticed during the recent ODM retreat in Mombasa. During the meeting, Kisii Governor Simba Arati read a speech on behalf of Dr Oburu Odinga.

In the message, the ODM leader apologised for missing the event and said he was unable to attend because of “unavoidable circumstances.” However, he did not explain further.

Later, ODM officials said doctors had advised him to take bed rest for some time. ODM Minority Leader Junet Mohammed assured party supporters that Dr Oburu Odinga is doing well and is expected to return to work soon.

According to party leaders, Oburu is expected to chair the ODM Central Management Committee meeting next week.

Dr Oburu Odinga became more active in ODM leadership after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga reduced his involvement in daily party activities.

Since taking a bigger role in the party, he has been helping to solve internal disagreements involving different ODM groups such as Linda Mwananchi and Linda Ground. He has also been involved in managing ODM’s working relationship with the ruling UDA party.

His recent absence has now sparked fresh debate about ODM’s future leadership plans, especially because of his age and the pressure that comes with active politics.

Last year, Dr Oburu Odinga reportedly travelled to Dubai for a short break after family members said he needed rest following a busy political schedule.

During his absence, senior ODM leaders, including Gladys Wanga and Junet Mohammed, have continued representing the party at public events.

Even so, many supporters are still waiting to know more about ODM’s future leadership direction and succession plans. Party officials have maintained that Dr Oburu Odinga is recovering well and will soon return to active politics.
