Orengo Says He Has No Faith in IEBC Ahead of 2027 Polls

Siaya Governor James Orengo has said he lacks confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, May 26, 2026, Orengo said that although he does not fully trust the electoral body, he still believes in Kenya’s Constitution and the rule of law.
“I do not have faith in it, but I have faith in the law and the Constitution,” Orengo said during the interview.
The governor explained that Kenya’s democratic systems and constitutional institutions are still important in ensuring that elections remain free and fair.
Orengo claimed that in the past, the electoral body interfered with election laws and technology meant to protect the voting process.
“A lot of times they interfere with the electoral laws, the process, and even the technology provided by the Constitution,” he said.
The Siaya governor also spoke about the 2027 presidential election and warned that President William Ruto could try to remain in power even if he loses the vote.
Speaking during Herman Manyora’s podcast in April 2026, Orengo claimed that changing political trends could make it difficult for Ruto to secure another victory.
“I don’t see an easy pathway to victory for him because the demographics are changing,” Orengo said.
According to Orengo, President Ruto has lost support in some regions, especially the Mount Kenya area, which played a major role during the 2022 General Election.
At the same time, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission recently warned politicians against making claims about election rigging.
In a statement released on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the commission said some political remarks could reduce public trust in Kenya’s democratic process.
IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon said such statements were reckless and could create fear among Kenyans.
“These utterances are unacceptable, reckless, and baseless,” Ethekon said.
The commission also insisted that only IEBC has the constitutional mandate to conduct and supervise elections in Kenya.
