An American man charged with staying in Kenya illegally caused laughter in a Nairobi court after complaining about being served ugali and cabbage while in custody.
An American citizen facing immigration charges in Kenya caused laughter at the Milimani Law Courts after complaining about the food he was being served while in police custody.
The man, identified as Hodgkinson Enock Jedidah, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Mutai on Thursday over claims that he was staying in Kenya without proper legal documents.
While addressing the court, Jedidah said he was not happy with the meals being provided to remandees. He specifically complained about being served ugali and cabbage, saying he wanted better food.
“I should be given good food. Ugali and cabbage is not enough for me,” he told the court, making people in the courtroom laugh.

The American also asked for bigger food portions and claimed he did not enjoy the meals being served in custody.
However, the magistrate did not grant his request and instead advised him to accept the food offered while in remand.
Jedidah denied the immigration charges against him. He claimed immigration officers had taken away his travel documents, making it difficult for him to regularize his stay in Kenya.
The prosecution, however, told the court that the American had overstayed in the country and had remained in Kenya illegally for a long time.
The court ordered that he be remanded at Industrial Area Prison as the case continues.
