Six Ebola Patients Escape as Angry Residents Torch Treatment Centre (VIDEO)

A group of angry youths attacked and set fire to part of an Ebola treatment centre in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after health workers refused to release the body of a man suspected of having died from the deadly virus.
The incident happened in the town of Rwampara, where tensions between residents and health officials have been growing during efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak.
According to local health officials, the youths stormed the facility and burned tents that were being used to treat and isolate Ebola patients. The attack caused panic among patients and medical workers.
Patients Escape During Attack
During the confusion, several patients fled the treatment centre. Hospital officials said six patients escaped and their whereabouts were not immediately known, raising concerns that the virus could spread further within the community.
Health workers condemned the attack, saying it disrupted efforts to control the outbreak and put more lives at risk.
Dispute Over Ebola Burial
The violence was reportedly triggered after family members and residents were prevented from collecting the body of a man believed to have died from Ebola.
Health authorities insist that Ebola victims must be buried using special safety procedures because the bodies remain highly infectious and can easily spread the virus to others.
However, some families have opposed the restrictions, arguing that they are unable to perform traditional burial rites for their loved ones.
Following the attack, security officers were deployed to monitor burials and protect health workers operating in affected areas.
Authorities have also introduced stricter measures aimed at controlling the outbreak, including limits on large public gatherings and funeral ceremonies.
Health officials continue to urge residents to cooperate with medical teams, warning that attacks on treatment centres and the escape of infected patients could make it harder to contain the disease.
