DCI Guns Down Suspect Behind Viral Spring Valley Restaurant Robbery, Recovers Beretta Pistol

A man believed to be one of the suspects captured on viral CCTV footage during the armed robbery at a restaurant in Spring Valley, Nairobi, has been shot dead during a police operation in Joska, Machakos County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), detectives from DCI Headquarters, working together with officers from DCI Matungulu, traced the suspect to a house in Joska where he was reportedly hiding at his girlfriend’s home.

Police said they identified themselves and ordered those inside the house to open the door. However, the suspect allegedly opened fire at the officers through a kitchen window, forcing the detectives to return fire.

After the shooting stopped, officers entered the house and found the suspect with fatal gunshot wounds.

During the operation, detectives recovered a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of 9mm ammunition. They also recovered additional ammunition, spent cartridges and three mobile phones from the house.

Investigators believe the suspect was involved in the daylight robbery along General Mathenge Road in Spring Valley, where armed men stormed a restaurant, stole mobile phones and other valuables from customers before escaping on motorcycles. The CCTV footage of the incident later spread widely on social media.

Police also suspect the man was part of a criminal gang linked to several violent robberies in Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos counties.

The recovered firearm has been taken to the National Police Service Forensic Laboratory for ballistic tests to determine whether it was used in other crimes.

Meanwhile, detectives have launched a search for other suspects believed to have escaped and are still on the run.
