Gachagua Claims There Is a Plot to Arrest Auditor General Nancy Gathungu

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that there are plans to arrest Auditor General Nancy Gathungu over audit reports released by her office.

Speaking on Friday, July 31, at his Wamunyoro home during a meeting with Maasai leaders and supporters, Gachagua alleged that he had received information from people within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to Gachagua, the information suggested that investigators had been instructed to look for evidence that could be used against the Auditor General.

He claimed that Gathungu had become a target because her audit reports had exposed alleged misuse of public funds in government programmes.

Gachagua appealed to President William Ruto to stop what he described as an attempt to intimidate the Auditor General. He also alleged that some officers within the DCI were unhappy with political interference in their work.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader further claimed that there was growing dissatisfaction among some public servants, including members of the National Police Service and the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

However, these claims have not been independently verified.

By the time of publication, the Office of the Auditor General, the DCI and the National Police Service had not issued any response to Gachagua’s allegations.

Murkomen Responds to Gachagua’s Earlier Claims

Gachagua’s remarks came a day after he claimed he already knew what President William Ruto would announce in his State of the Nation Address.

One of the issues he mentioned was the launch of a new national vision, which President Ruto later announced would be discussed through a nationwide conversation starting on August 12.

Responding on Friday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen dismissed claims that Gachagua had access to confidential government information.

Murkomen said discussions about the country’s future had involved Cabinet members and technical teams for several weeks, adding that there was nothing secret about the President’s planned announcement.

He maintained that the national vision had been under preparation for some time and that many government officials were already aware of the process.
