Gladys Wanga Responds to Orengo Remarks in Emotional Letter

Gladys Wanga has spoken publicly after remarks made by James Orengo, saying the comments left her hurt and embarrassed while also highlighting the struggles many women face in leadership positions.

In a statement shared on Thursday, Wanga explained that she was speaking as an individual and not in her official roles as Homa Bay Governor or national chairperson of Orange Democratic Movement.

The governor described Orengo as a leader she has respected for many years, adding that many young politicians have always looked up to him for guidance and inspiration.

Wanga said she first decided to remain silent because not every political disagreement should turn into a public argument. However, she noted that some issues need to be addressed because of the message they send to society.

According to her, the comments were painful because they came from someone she viewed as a senior leader and father figure.

She explained that the remarks not only affected her personally but also reflected the challenges many women continue to experience in politics and leadership.

Wanga said women leaders are often criticised differently from men, with some comments aimed at belittling or humiliating them because of their gender.

She added that statements made by influential leaders can shape how society views women and can affect how women are treated in workplaces, politics and public spaces.

The governor noted that many women are regularly told to reduce their voices, avoid taking up space or stay behind others simply because they are women.

Wanga further said leadership should always respect the dignity and humanity of others instead of humiliating them.

Despite expressing disappointment, she maintained a calm tone throughout her statement and avoided escalating the matter politically.

The Homa Bay governor said she still respects Orengo and recognises his contribution to Kenya’s political history.

She also stated that she had chosen forgiveness and remains ready to engage and work together on issues that benefit the people and help improve the community.
