Government Clarifies on KCSE Results Release

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has dismissed online claims that the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results were released secretly by the government.

The rumours spread widely on social media after a viral post alleged that Kapsabet Boys High School had emerged as the best school nationally. This claim raised eyebrows because the government banned the ranking of schools in national examinations.

Some social media users went further to share a screenshot claiming that CS Ogamba had announced the KCSE results on live television. However, the Education CS has strongly denied the claims.

“Such information is fake and misleading. The public should ignore it completely,” Ogamba said in a statement on Saturday.

KCSE Results Yet to Be Officially Released

The Ministry of Education has clarified that only the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), through the Ministry, has the authority to officially release KCSE results.

Speaking earlier in December during the Omogusii Cultural Festival at Kenyoro School Grounds in Nyamira County, Ogamba stated that the 2024 KCSE results would be released in the second week of January, before January 15.

“The KCSE results will be announced within two weeks. Traditionally, KCSE results are released in January, and we are sticking to that tradition,” he said.

Confusion Over December Results Explained

Ogamba also explained that confusion arose because in past years, KCPE results were released in December. However, KCPE was not conducted in 2024 following the introduction of the new education system.

“The exams that used to be released in December were KCPE. Since that exam was not done this year, some people got confused,” he explained.

KNEC Warns of KCSE Scams

Meanwhile, KNEC has warned parents and candidates about fraudsters pretending they can change KCSE results.

On December 3, 2025, the council revealed that scammers were operating WhatsApp groups and online platforms, asking parents for money in exchange for fake promises of exam score manipulation.

KNEC assured the public that all KCSE answer scripts are fully anonymised during marking, making it impossible to identify or alter a candidate’s results.

KCSE Statistics at a Glance

The 2024 KCSE exams were conducted between October 22 and November across 10,755 examination centres nationwide.

A total of 965,501 candidates sat the exams, an increase from 903,138 candidates in 2023. Marking was completed on December 13, 2024, after examiners worked across 35 marking centres countrywide.
