The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning over heavy rains expected in several parts of the country from April 22 to April 27, 2026.
In the weather advisory released on Tuesday, April 21, the department said the rains are likely to become heavier in the Coast, North Eastern, and South Eastern lowland areas during the period.
According to the department, some areas may receive more than 20 millimetres of rainfall within 24 hours, especially in the coastal region.
The counties expected to be affected include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, and Lamu.
Other areas listed in the warning are Garissa, parts of Wajir and Mandera, as well as Taita Taveta, Kitui, and Makueni counties.
Kenya Met further warned that the heavy rains may be accompanied by strong winds exceeding 25 knots, which is about 12.5 metres per second.
For residents living along the Coast, the department said the sea is expected to become rough, with waves likely to rise above two metres, posing danger to fishermen and other maritime operators.
People living in the affected counties have been advised to remain alert because of the risk of floods, flash floods, and poor visibility.
The department also cautioned that flooding may also happen in places that are not receiving heavy rain, especially in areas located downstream of rivers.
Members of the public have been advised not to walk or drive through moving floodwaters, as this can be very dangerous.
During thunderstorms, residents have also been warned against standing in open fields or taking shelter under trees due to the risk of lightning strikes.
Maritime operators along the Coast have been asked to take extra precautions as sea conditions are expected to worsen over the coming days.
Kenya Met said it will continue to provide updates if there are any changes in the weather forecast.
