Cherargei Defends Gaucho’s Appointment to Mama Lucy Hospital Board Amid Qualifications Debate

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has strongly defended the appointment of youth activist Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, to the board of management of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

The senator responded to criticism from Kenyans who questioned why Gaucho was selected for the position while many qualified graduates, including those with Master’s and PhD degrees, were left out.

Gaucho was recently appointed by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to serve on the hospital’s board for a period of three years starting from April 16, 2026.

His appointment has sparked debate online, with some people arguing that hospital boards should be made up of professionals with backgrounds in health, finance, or administration.

However, Cherargei dismissed the criticism and said many of those complaining are the same people who have been calling for the inclusion of ordinary Kenyans in government appointments.

According to the senator, Kenyans often ask why youths, boda boda riders, mama mboga traders, and other common citizens are not given government positions. He said it is unfair for the same people to now question Gaucho’s appointment.

Cherargei said the criticism shows hypocrisy, adding that inclusivity should apply to everyone, including grassroots leaders.

He encouraged Gaucho to remain focused and serve Kenyans with dedication, saying he should not be intimidated by the backlash.

Gaucho became widely known during the 2023 cost of living protests, where he emerged as one of the most vocal youth leaders in Nairobi.

His strong presence during the demonstrations and his close connection with people from low-income areas earned him the nickname “Ghetto President.”

Supporters of his appointment say leadership boards need diverse voices, including people who understand the daily struggles of ordinary citizens who rely on public hospitals.

On the other hand, critics maintain that important institutions such as hospitals should prioritise people with professional qualifications and academic experience.

The debate continues to divide opinion among Kenyans, with many now waiting to see how Gaucho performs in his new role at one of Nairobi’s busiest public hospitals.
