Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains in 5 Regions This Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans to prepare for heavy rains expected between Friday, May 8 and Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

According to the latest weather forecast, several parts of the country will receive heavy rainfall, especially in Western Kenya, Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin and the Coastal region.

Counties expected to experience heavy rains in Western Kenya, Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin include Kisumu County, Siaya County, Homa Bay County, Migori County, Kisii County, Nyamira County, Trans Nzoia County and Baringo County.

Other counties likely to receive rainfall include Uasin Gishu County, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Nandi County, Nakuru County, Narok County, Kericho County, Bomet County, Kakamega County, Vihiga County, Bungoma County, Busia County and West Pokot County.

The weather department said most areas will experience cloudy mornings followed by afternoon rains and thunderstorms.

In Central Kenya, counties expected to receive heavy rainfall include Nyandarua County, Laikipia County, Nyeri County, Kirinyaga County, Murang’a County, Kiambu County, Meru County, Embu County, Tharaka Nithi County and Nairobi.

Residents living in flood-prone areas have been advised to stay alert as the heavy rains may cause flooding in some places.

Meanwhile, the Coastal region counties of Mombasa County, Kilifi County, Lamu County and Kwale County are expected to receive moderate rainfall over the next few days.

However, counties in the southeastern region such as Machakos County, Kitui County and Makueni County are expected to remain mostly dry and cloudy.

The weather department also warned residents in Central Kenya to prepare for cold nights. Temperatures in some areas are expected to drop to as low as 9°C over the next five days.

At the same time, parts of Northern Kenya and the Coast are expected to continue experiencing high temperatures, with daytime temperatures rising to 37°C.
