Kenyans React as Ruto and Gachagua Exchange Harsh Words at Political Rallies

Many Kenyans have raised concerns after President William Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, exchanged sharp remarks during recent political rallies.

The public disagreement between the two leaders has drawn criticism from citizens who feel the language used by top politicians should reflect leadership and respect, especially as the country slowly moves toward the 2027 General Election.

Political rivalry turns into public insults

The relationship between Ruto and Gachagua has become increasingly tense, with both leaders making critical statements about each other during public gatherings.

Observers say the exchanges appear to be part of the growing political rivalry ahead of the next elections. However, some Kenyans believe the arguments have crossed the line, as the leaders have reportedly used personal remarks and accusations while addressing crowds.

What the law says about hate speech

Kenya’s 2010 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression. However, the law also places limits on speech that can harm others.

Experts note that freedom of expression does not allow people, including politicians, to promote hate, discrimination, or insults based on personal characteristics such as health condition, background, or physical appearance.

According to the National Cohesion and Integration Act, individuals who use threatening, abusive, or insulting language in public may face legal consequences.

The law states that anyone found guilty of such an offence can be fined up to KSh 1 million, sentenced to up to three years in prison, or both.

Kenyans call for respectful leadership

Following the recent political exchanges, many Kenyans shared their opinions online. A large number of citizens said leaders should set a good example and maintain dignity when addressing the public.

Some argued that the office of the president should represent unity and should not be associated with personal attacks.

Others reminded politicians that their words influence the behaviour of citizens and can either promote peace or create unnecessary tension in the country.

Debate over Ruto’s weight loss

The disagreement between the two leaders also included comments about President Ruto’s physical appearance.

Gachagua previously claimed that the president had lost noticeable weight despite living and eating at State House.

In response, Ruto said his weight loss was intentional. He explained that he had been working on improving his fitness so that he could remain energetic and effectively serve the country.

The president also encouraged his critics to focus on staying physically active rather than engaging in political attacks during public rallies.

Growing political tension ahead of 2027

With political activities slowly increasing ahead of the next elections, many Kenyans are urging leaders to focus on national unity and development rather than personal battles.

Political analysts say maintaining respectful public debate will be important in ensuring peaceful campaigns as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
