Residents of Shinyalu constituency in Kakamega County have raised concerns over delays in the construction of a major road that was launched by President William Ruto in October 2025.
The road, known as the Kakamega Airstrip–Shinyalu–Chepsonoi Road, was officially launched on October 30 during the president’s tour of Western Kenya.
The project covers about 25 kilometres and is expected to improve transport between Kakamega and Nandi counties.

Nearly three months after the launch, locals say no meaningful construction work has taken place.
Residents in the Airstrip area report that road machinery appeared briefly after the ceremony but left the site shortly afterwards.
The road remains in poor condition, making movement difficult, especially during the rainy season.
Motorists and farmers are forced to use narrow village roads that are also badly damaged. This has increased travel time and transport costs for farm produce.
Residents say they had high hopes after the launch, believing the project would begin immediately.
The delay has caused frustration, with many questioning whether the project is still active.
Attention has now shifted to Shinyalu Member of Parliament Fredrick Ikana. Locals argue that, given his close working relationship with the national government, the road should have progressed faster.
They want clear information on when construction will begin and why the contractor is not on site.
