KUPPET Threatens to Quit SHA Medical Cover Over Ksh 1,200 Outpatient Limit

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has warned that it may pull out of the Social Health Authority (SHA) medical cover if the government does not remove the Ksh 1,200 limit placed on outpatient services.
According to the union, the current amount is too low and mainly covers consultation fees only, leaving teachers to pay extra money for medicine, tests, and other routine treatment.
KUPPET officials said the cap has made the medical cover less useful for teachers who depend on it for regular healthcare services.
The union also raised concerns about delays in getting medical services in hospitals. They said some teachers and their families have faced difficulties during hospital admissions, while others have been turned away by major private hospitals because the SHA system is not fully integrated.
Officials now say the situation is becoming frustrating for teachers and have warned that they may take action, including a possible boycott or strike, if the medical cover is not returned to better standards.
The union wants the government to urgently review the outpatient limit and improve the system to ensure teachers receive quality healthcare without unnecessary delays.
