The announcement was made in Parliament on Wednesday, June 17, by Budget and Appropriations Committee Chairperson Samuel Atandi. He said the government had allocated KSh1.5 billion in the Supplementary Estimates II for the 2025/2026 financial year to settle the outstanding payments.
According to Atandi, the funds will be used to clear the arrears owed to teachers who took part in supervising national examinations.
Members of Parliament have already approved the Budget and Appropriations Committee report, paving the way for the release of the money.
Teachers who supervised the 2025 KCPE and KCSE national examinations are set to receive their long-awaited allowances after the government confirmed that the money will be released by June 30.
Treasury Confirms Payment Plan
The announcement comes after months of complaints from teachers over delays in receiving their allowances.
During the presentation of the 2026/27 national budget, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi assured teachers that the KSh1.5 billion owed to exam officials would be paid before the end of the 2025/26 financial year.
Mbadi also proposed an additional KSh9.9 billion to facilitate the administration of national examinations in 2026.
Previous Delays Linked to Financial Constraints
Earlier, former Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok said the government would release the payments in phases because of financial challenges.
Speaking in Uasin Gishu County, Bitok admitted that there had been delays in settling KNEC-related dues but assured affected teachers that the issue was being addressed.
He said he had raised the matter with President William Ruto, who directed the National Treasury to speed up the payment process.
Bitok added that some groups, including officials involved in Teacher Training College and TVET examinations, had already started receiving their dues. Security officers and drivers were also among those prioritized in the first phase of payments.
The latest announcement is expected to bring relief to thousands of teachers who have been waiting for their allowances since the completion of the 2025 national examinations.
