Police officers have stopped a passenger bus along the Thika–Garissa Highway after discovering dangerous items hidden inside.
According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the incident happened during a normal security check at Kanyonyoo, where officers from different agencies had set up a roadblock.
During the inspection, officers checked the bus as usual, but became suspicious after finding unusual items in the luggage section.
Inside a blue metallic box, police recovered 19 rounds of 7.62x51mm G3 ammunition and 116 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition. They also found two empty AK-47 magazines and two machetes.

Apart from the weapons, officers also discovered items believed to belong to security forces. These included a full set of GSU ceremonial uniform, two combat jackets, three jungle green trousers, and a red beret.
Police said the package had been sent from Mokowe in Lamu County and was heading to another destination. However, the parcel had no clear sender details, raising serious suspicion about where it came from and its intended use.
The bus driver and conductor were immediately arrested at the scene. They were taken together with the vehicle and the recovered items to Kanyonyoo Police Station in Kitui County.
Detectives have already started investigations to understand who owns the items and how they ended up in the bus.
The DCI said more arrests are likely as they continue to follow important leads to uncover the people behind the shipment.
This incident comes at a time when security along the Nairobi–Garissa Highway has been a major concern.
Recently, Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, ordered the deployment of special police units to improve security along the road.
The National Police Service (NPS) also confirmed that elite teams have been sent to the area to ensure safety for passengers and businesses.
Units such as the General Service Unit (GSU) and the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) are currently on the ground, escorting vehicles and maintaining order along the highway.
