At least two people have died after violent clashes broke out between protesters and police officers in Mbeere North on Tuesday, April 14.
The victims were among a group of young people who had gone to the streets to protest over the poor condition of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.
The demonstrations started peacefully but later turned chaotic, causing major disruption along the Embu Highway. Protesters blocked the road using stones, making it difficult for vehicles to pass for several hours.
The situation worsened in the afternoon when police officers tried to disperse the crowd. This led to a confrontation, with protesters resisting the police orders.
According to reports, police fired live bullets during the clashes, leading to the death of two protesters.
Ishiara Level 4 Hospital has been under heavy criticism in recent weeks. Local leaders had earlier raised concerns, saying the hospital is in a bad state and needs urgent improvement.
Photos shared widely on social media showed the hospital in poor condition, including damaged roofs and old buildings. These images angered residents, who depend on the facility for medical services.
The hospital is an important healthcare center in the area, and many locals are now demanding that the county government take action and upgrade it.
This incident comes just weeks after a similar case in Siaya, where two protesters were also shot dead by police. The group had been protesting over claims of eviction from a gold mining site.
The rising number of violent protests has raised concern across the country. There have also been growing calls to deal with increasing cases of organized violence in different regions.
On Sunday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said he had allowed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to take firm action against such incidents, with full support from the government.
