SHA Says Late Health Insurance Payments Will Attract 2% Penalty

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has warned Kenyans who are required to make their own health insurance contributions that delaying payments will attract financial penalties.
In a public notice issued on Saturday, August 1, SHA said members who fail to pay their contributions on time will be charged a penalty of 2% of the unpaid amount. The penalty will continue to increase until the outstanding balance is fully paid.
The authority also warned that members with unpaid contributions and accumulated penalties will not be able to access SHA healthcare services until they clear all the money they owe.
Who Will Be Affected?
The notice mainly targets Kenyans working in the informal sector. This includes:
- Farmers
- Traders
- Boda boda riders
- Casual labourers
- Domestic workers
- Self-employed individuals
These groups are required to register with SHA and make regular contributions under the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023.
How Members Can Pay
SHA allows members to pay their annual contribution in full or use the Lipa Pole Pole payment plan, which lets them pay in instalments.
For members using the instalment option, medical cover becomes active after they have paid an amount equal to four months of their assessed annual contribution.
How to Register
Kenyans can register for SHA through:
- The *147# USSD code
- SHA online platforms
- SHA branches
- Huduma Centres
After registration, members must create an account using their National ID and a mobile phone number registered in their name. They will also be required to set a secure PIN, confirm their personal details, register eligible dependants, and complete a means test by providing information about their household, income, and assets.
SHA will then calculate and communicate the amount each member is required to contribute based on the information provided.
The authority has advised all members to pay their contributions on time to avoid penalties and ensure they continue receiving healthcare services without interruption.
