Teachers to Renew Licences Every Five Years Under New TSC Rules

Teachers in Kenya will soon be required to renew their teaching licences every five years under new rules being introduced by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
According to TSC Chief Executive Officer Evaleen Mitei, the new requirement is part of changes being made to improve the teaching profession and raise education standards in the country.
The new system will be linked to the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme, which all registered teachers must complete before renewing their licences.
Mitei said the updated TPD programme will mostly be conducted online and teachers will not be charged any money to participate.
“We will not charge teachers for TPD training. However, completing the programme will be necessary for renewing a teaching licence,” she said.
The TSC boss explained that teachers who complete the five-year training programme will qualify to renew their practising licences.
She said the move is aimed at helping teachers improve their skills and keep up with changes in the education sector, especially under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
The commission also believes the licensing system will help Kenyan teachers seeking jobs abroad. Many teachers have faced challenges in other countries because Kenya does not currently issue practising licences like other professions.
Mitei said professions such as law already require licence renewals, and the teaching profession should also follow the same path.
TSC is also developing an online Learning Management System that will allow teachers to access training materials and learning modules easily.
The commission says the new programme will help teachers adapt to new technology, changing learner needs and emerging trends in education.
In addition, TSC has strengthened its mentorship and coaching programmes to support both new and experienced teachers.
According to Mitei, the mentorship programme will help newly employed teachers settle into the profession while allowing experienced teachers to share their knowledge and best practices.
The commission believes these changes will improve classroom teaching and provide learners with a better educational experience.
