Kenyan Politicians Who Have Never Lost a Major Election in Over 20 Years
3 min read
While many politicians in Kenya dream of electoral victory, only a select few have managed to maintain an unbroken winning streak throughout their political careers. Over two decades, most prominent leaders have faced at least one loss, making this achievement exceptionally rare.
Even some of Kenya’s most influential figures, such as the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta, experienced defeats in their journeys. Raila Odinga, for example, lost all five of his presidential bids, while Uhuru Kenyatta lost in 2002 before winning in 2013. Other leaders, including former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Kenya’s first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, also suffered losses in their presidential attempts.
Yet, a handful of politicians have managed to remain unbeaten in every election they’ve contested. Here’s a look at some of these remarkable figures:
William Ruto
President William Ruto is a prime example of a Kenyan politician who has never lost an election. His political journey began in the early 1990s as a member of the Youth for KANU ’92 (YK92) group.
Ruto first ran for office in 1997, contesting the Eldoret North parliamentary seat under KANU. He won on his first attempt and successfully defended the seat in the 2002 and 2007 elections, this time under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

After the 2010 Constitution changed electoral rules, Ruto transitioned from parliament to the national stage, serving as Deputy President alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta from 2013 to 2022. In 2022, he contested for the presidency under the UDA party within the Kenya Kwanza coalition and emerged victorious, despite limited support from Uhuru Kenyatta.
From his first parliamentary race to his current role as President, William Ruto has maintained a flawless record in elections spanning more than 20 years.
Irungu Kang’ata
Murang’a Senator-turned-Governor Irungu Kang’ata is another politician who has never lost an election. His political career began in 2002 when he won a seat in the Central Ward of Kiharu Constituency.
In 2013, Kang’ata successfully contested for the Kiharu parliamentary seat under the TNA party. By 2017, he had moved to the national stage, winning the Murang’a Senatorial seat via the Jubilee Party. During his tenure as Senator, he also served as Senate Chief Whip, a role that sparked notable political controversies.
In 2022, Kang’ata won the Murang’a Governor seat under the UDA ticket, maintaining his unbroken winning streak in elective positions for over 20 years.

Babu Owino
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino is also among Kenyan politicians who have never lost an election.
His political rise began in student leadership at the University of Nairobi, where he served as the Students’ Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) chairman for several terms.
In 2017, Babu Owino contested the Embakasi East parliamentary seat and won convincingly. He successfully defended the seat in the 2022 general election.
Since entering elective politics, Babu Owino has maintained a perfect winning record, making him one of the few modern Kenyan politicians with consecutive electoral victories.

Daniel Arap Moi
Kenya’s second President, Daniel Arap Moi, also had a distinguished record of electoral success. Serving as President from 1978 to 2002, Moi never lost an election throughout his 24-year rule.
Before ascending to the presidency, Moi served as a Member of Parliament for Baringo North starting in 1963, and later represented Baringo Central until his retirement. His long-standing dominance in Kenyan politics cemented his legacy as a leader with an impeccable electoral record.
