Signs Emerge Ruto May Drop Kindiki as 2027 Running Mate
2 min read
There is a growing political debate over whether President William Ruto will keep Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as his running mate in the 2027 General Election.
This comes even after the ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), recently insisted that Kindiki remains their official choice.
UDA Maintains Its Position
On April 3, 2026, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar confirmed that the party’s position has not changed. He said that Kithure Kindiki is still the preferred running mate for President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
However, Kindiki himself has recently taken a more cautious tone. He has described the deputy president’s role as temporary and uncertain, saying leaders should focus more on serving the public than on future political promises.

Political Pressure Builds
Despite UDA’s official stance, political pressure is mounting from various quarters.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is reportedly pushing for more influence in the government arrangement, including a possible interest in the deputy president position as part of a broader political deal.
Several names are now being mentioned as possible alternatives if changes happen:
- Gladys Wanga, the Homa Bay Governor, is seen as a possible choice to help attract support from the Luo Nyanza region
- John Mbadi, the Treasury Cabinet Secretary, is also mentioned as a steady and experienced option
- Kalonzo Musyoka is still widely discussed in political circles, with speculation about possible political negotiations involving him

Regional and Strategic Factors
Political analysts believe President Ruto may eventually consider regional balance when choosing a running mate. The focus could be on strengthening support in key regions such as Mt. Kenya, Western Kenya, or Nyanza.
Supporters of Kindiki, however, argue that he has already proven his ability to deliver political results, including helping UDA perform well in the Mbeere North area.
For now, UDA has officially stood by Kindiki. However, ongoing political discussions and shifting alliances continue to fuel speculation about possible changes ahead of the 2027 elections.
