Oburu Odinga Speaks After Two-Week Absence, ODM Confirms He Is Healthy

ODM leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has finally appeared in public after staying away from political events for nearly two weeks.

In a video shared on Friday, May 8, Oburu assured Kenyans that he is healthy and doing well. The veteran politician said he was in Kisumu spending time with friends while playing golf.

“Thank you for being concerned about me. I am here in Kisumu, feeling well and enjoying a game of golf. I wish you all a happy weekend,” Oburu said in the video.

ODM Communication Director Philip Etale also dismissed reports on social media claiming that Oburu had travelled abroad for treatment.

Speaking in Nairobi, Etale said the ODM leader is healthy and will soon appear in public again.

“We have seen reports questioning where our party leader has been. I want to confirm that he is okay and there is no problem,” Etale said.

He added that rumours saying Oburu is sick or unable to lead the party are false. According to Etale, the ODM leader is still active and focused on preparing the party for the 2027 General Election.

Etale further revealed that Oburu is expected to attend a public event on Saturday at the former school of his late father.

Before his latest appearance, Oburu had missed several important ODM meetings and political events, including the party retreat held in Mombasa. His absence had led to growing speculation online about his health and whereabouts.

The latest developments come at a time when ODM is facing internal disagreements over its political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.

One group within the party supports working together with President William Ruto and the ruling UDA party through the broad-based government arrangement.

Another faction linked to James Orengo and former ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna wants the party to remain independent and avoid supporting President Ruto’s re-election plans.

There are also disagreements over the implementation of the 10-point agreement signed between the late Raila Odinga and President Ruto. Some ODM members believe the government has not fully fulfilled the promises made in the deal.
