Maurice Ogeta, who served as Raila Odinga’s bodyguard for many years, has spoken about the former Prime Minister’s final moments and dismissed reports that he collapsed before his death.
Speaking in Karen on Monday, June 1, 2026, Ogeta shared his account during an event where Gor Mahia FC presented a trophy to Ida Odinga in honour of the late Raila Odinga, who was the club’s patron.
According to Ogeta, Raila was carrying out his normal therapeutic walk at the hospital on October 15, 2025. Before starting the walk, Raila reportedly informed him that he planned to complete five rounds on the walking track.
However, after finishing the first round, Raila suddenly stopped walking.
Ogeta said he immediately became concerned and asked his boss whether there was a problem or if he needed assistance.
Recalling the emotional moment, Ogeta said the only response he received was the word “Aii.”
“Raila died walking, he wasn’t on a bed. My boss just stopped. Most people say or think he fell or collapsed, but that is not what happened. He simply stopped walking. I asked him if there was any problem and whether I could help him. The only thing he said was ‘Aii’, and that was the last word I heard from him,” Ogeta said.
His remarks come at a time when different accounts have emerged about the circumstances surrounding Raila’s death.
Some reports had suggested that the veteran opposition leader collapsed while taking a walk before being rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Raila’s sister, Ruth Odinga, had also previously indicated that he collapsed before his condition worsened.
The differing explanations have continued to spark debate among some political leaders and Kenyans, with questions being raised about the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
Siaya Governor James Orengo is among leaders who have publicly questioned what happened. On several occasions, he has claimed that Raila was killed, although he has not provided details or named any individuals.
Orengo has also alleged that those responsible are now targeting the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the party Raila spent decades building.
Despite making the claims, the governor has maintained that he will reveal more information at an appropriate time out of respect for Raila’s family.
Ruth Odinga has also indicated that she is not fully satisfied with the explanations given so far and has promised to speak further on the matter when the time is right.
Other leaders, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have similarly stated that they will share their views on Raila’s death at a later date.
