Kenya Chosen for Amazon's First Satellite Ground Station in Africa

Amazon Plans to Build First African Satellite Ground Station in Kenya to Support Global Internet Connectivity

Kenya has been selected to host Amazon’s first satellite ground station in Africa, marking a major step in the company’s efforts to expand internet access across the continent.

The project will be undertaken through Amazon’s subsidiary, Amazon Kuiper Kenya Limited, as part of Project Kuiper, the company’s low-Earth orbit satellite network aimed at delivering fast internet services around the world.

The planned facility will connect satellites to ground networks, helping provide broadband services to areas with limited or no internet access. According to reports, the network could deliver internet speeds of up to 1,280 Mbps.

Amazon has already submitted an application to the Communications Authority of Kenya seeking approval to operate the project in the country.

The move is expected to increase competition in the satellite internet market, where Elon Musk’s Starlink has already established a presence. Starlink currently offers internet speeds ranging between 50 Mbps and 250 Mbps in many areas.

Amazon also plans to work with major telecommunications companies instead of relying solely on direct satellite connections. Through its partnership with Vodafone, the parent company of Safaricom, the network could be integrated with existing 4G and 5G infrastructure.

The company is aiming to deploy more than 3,200 satellites by 2028 as it seeks to expand its global internet services and strengthen its position in the broadband market.

The decision to establish the first African satellite ground station in Kenya further highlights the country’s growing importance as a technology and innovation hub in the region.
