The announcement comes at a time when many parents, teachers and students have been raising concerns over the long second term and the recent cases of unrest reported in some secondary schools.
Ogamba also revealed that the Ministry of Education plans to review the current school calendar from the next academic year to ensure all three terms have a more balanced learning period.
According to the CS, only a small number of schools have been affected by unrest, with more than 98 percent of institutions continuing with normal learning activities.
He said most of the affected schools are boarding secondary schools, while learning in Grades 1 to 9 has continued without major disruptions.
So far, the ministry has received reports of unrest in 204 senior schools across the country. Learners in 59 of those schools have already resumed classes, with more expected to return.
Ogamba blamed the unrest on several issues, including exam pressure, poor conditions in some boarding schools, leadership challenges, drug and substance abuse, peer influence and demands by students to be released from school earlier.
To find lasting solutions, the government will form a team bringing together different stakeholders to investigate the causes of school unrest and recommend appropriate measures.
Schools have also been directed to strengthen guidance and counselling programmes, improve safety measures and hold meetings with parents to address concerns affecting learners.
County and Sub-County Education offices have further been instructed to closely monitor schools considered vulnerable to unrest.
The planned changes to the school calendar are expected to address concerns that the second term is longer than the other terms and create a more balanced academic schedule for learners.Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has confirmed that schools will close for the second term half-term break from June 24 to June 28, 2026.
