President William Ruto has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of supporting and financing the Opposition in an effort to undermine his administration.
Speaking to residents in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Thursday, August 13, Ruto questioned Uhuru’s record during his presidency, particularly on affordable housing, Universal Health Coverage and education.
The President claimed that Uhuru had now turned to supporting groups calling for his removal from office.
Ruto also criticised Opposition leaders for using slogans such as “one term” and “must go” instead of presenting Kenyans with alternative policies and plans.
He defended his government’s record, pointing to affordable housing projects, markets and hostels being constructed across the country. According to Ruto, the projects are creating employment opportunities, especially for young people.
The President urged young people working on affordable housing projects to prepare for more opportunities, saying he wants the programme to continue if he wins another term.
“This work I want us to continue for 20 years and make Kenya a construction site,” Ruto said.
Ruto’s remarks come amid claims by some Kenya Kwanza leaders that Uhuru is backing the Linda Mwananchi movement and the wider Opposition.
However, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has denied that Uhuru is financially supporting the Opposition.
Speaking on Citizen TV in July, Sifuna said Uhuru mainly encourages young people to participate in leadership and has not been providing financial support.
The claims about Uhuru’s alleged involvement in Opposition activities have therefore remained a point of political debate.
