DCI Gives Details on Probox Captured on CCTV Before Cyrus Jirongo Crash
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released fresh information regarding the ongoing probe into the fatal road accident that claimed the life of veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo.
At the centre of the investigation is a white Toyota Probox that was recorded on CCTV at Eagol Petrol Station shortly before the deadly crash occurred.

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 25, the DCI confirmed that detectives travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, to trace and question individuals linked to the Probox captured in the footage.
According to reports, the vehicle registration number KDJ 564E was seen entering the petrol station moments after Jirongo arrived and later leaving shortly after him.
Following the interviews, investigators established the ownership and management of the vehicle. The DCI stated that the Probox is registered to Keringet Ward MCA and Nakuru County Assembly Majority Leader, William Mutai, and is managed by his wife.
Investigators further revealed that the vehicle had been hired out shortly before the incident.
The DCI said that on December 11, 2025, the MCA’s wife rented the Probox to Denis Kipyegon Koech, who intended to use it to transport family members to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to receive their son arriving from New Mexico University in the United States.
According to statements recorded by detectives, Koech and his family left Keringet for Nairobi on December 12, 2025, reaching JKIA at around 5:00 p.m. Their son’s flight landed at approximately 10:00 p.m., after which the family began their return journey shortly after midnight.
The DCI noted that the return trip coincided with deteriorating weather conditions. While travelling back, the family stopped at Eagol Petrol Station in Karai to top up their wiper fluid due to poor visibility.
During the brief stop, they reportedly noticed Jirongo leaving the petrol station and driving toward Nairobi. Moments later, while still at the station, they heard a loud impact and saw a bus dragging the politician’s vehicle.
The DCI added that after refilling the fluid, the occupants of the Probox briefly stopped near the crash scene at the request of a petrol station guard who asked for assistance. They did not leave their vehicle but used their headlights to illuminate the wreckage, as it was dark and no other vehicles had arrived.
According to investigators, the family left the scene once other motorists began arriving and traffic started building up. They later continued with their journey and only discovered the identity of the crash victim afterward.
